history
Joseph Hubertus Pilates, the German born athlete and physical therapy pioneer,
created and developed The Pilates Method beginning in the early 1900s and
continuing until his death in 1967. The Method incorporates both Eastern
and Western philosophies of physical, as well as mental conditioning.
Utilizing highly specialized equipment, his innovative approach develops maximal muscle strength while increasing flexibility. The combination of superior strength and enhanced range of motion allows for extremely efficient performance capabilities. The system re-patterns, realigns, clarifies and defines the body. It frees the user from poor postural habits, helps heal the chronic bad back and stiff neck, and eliminates tension, stress, and fatigue. In addition, the system promotes increased circulation of energy and blood stimulating an "internal cleansing" of the body.
The results achieved
through the study of Pilates are unparalleled. Anyone at any age or fitness
level can derive some benefit from this unique system. Users of The Pilates
Method gain intrinsic strength, breath control and absolute precision of
movement. Doctors, physical therapists, dancers, and athletes have long revered
The Pilates Method as a healing and educational training system.
Whether you wish to gain a happy healthy body, fix your aching back, or increase
your performance potential, The Pilates Method is the best method there is.
method
The Pilates Method of body conditioning (pronounced puh-LAH-tees) is a non-weight
bearing, non-impact system of exercise that promotes physical and mental
balance. The exercises are performed at a low number of repetitions, and
muscles are strengthened without creating bulk. The result is longer, more
flexible muscles and lean, lithe, powerful bodies with substantially improved
posture.
The Pilates Method of body conditioning has been a training secret for dancers and athletes for more than 60 years. It has now begun to attract a devout and more universal following of people interested in its overall conditioning, healing and balancing techniques. The medical community recognizes the Pilates Method of body conditioning because of its application in injury prevention and rehabilitation. It is gentle enough for a pregnant woman, but sophisticated enough to challenge the super fit.
The ultimate goals of the Pilates Method of body conditioning are an extremely high degree of abdominal strength, total body awareness and muscle control, the enhancement of muscular capacity and joint flexibility, and most significantly, the combined power of body and mind.
